What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a multi-unit prosthetic that usually has a crown on each end. The crowns are fused to one or more pontics (artificial teeth), which are used to replace one or more teeth in a row. Bridges can be made of various materials, including lifelike options such as porcelain and ceramic. They are very strong and often last for up to 10 years or longer.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are a few different types of dental bridges. The two most popular options are traditional fixed bridges and implant bridges. Both restorations come with a unique set of pros and cons. During your consultation, we will recommend the type that we believe is best for your unique circumstances and preferences.

In the meantime, here is a brief overview of each type of bridge:

Traditional Dental Bridges

In order to place a traditional bridge, we must first modify the abutment teeth (the teeth that surround the empty space in your mouth). This allows them to fit securely underneath their crowns. Then, we take impressions and design the bridge. After a lab fabricates it, we permanently bond it onto the abutment teeth. The process usually takes just a few appointments, and you can rely on your restoration to provide strong chewing power and attractive aesthetics for years to come.

Implant Bridges

An implant bridge does not require support from the abutment teeth. Instead, we surgically place prosthetic tooth roots (dental implants) beneath the gumline. The implants support crowns, and the crowns hold one or more pontics between them. Implant bridges offer remarkable strength and stability, and they have the added benefit of supporting jawbone health. Although the process takes longer than a traditional bridge, the advantages of dental implants certainly make them worthy of your consideration.
